DeepSeek 4.1 Flash is the cheapest new AI model you can use for SillyTavern RP. But is it actually any good at handling your story? Here’s my experience using it.
DeepSeek 4.1 Flash does a pretty good job of keeping your character’s personality consistent. Some of the characters I’ve made have strong opinions about how I talk to them and how I handle certain situations.
The model was tested again using the character Lisa, with a scenario centered around casual office romance, family life, and workplace relationships.
One of my characters, Lisa, for example, really hates it when I don’t tell her upfront what I’m doing. She doesn’t like surprises or being left out of decisions. Even when I’m trying to show her love through my actions without telling her how I feel first, she doesn’t take it well.
It’s not that she doesn’t appreciate the gesture. It’s more that, based on how DeepSeek portrays her personality, she wants to be in the room with me and not finding out about everything after the fact.
That’s the fun part about DeepSeek 4.1 Flash. The characters stay pretty consistent, responses are snappy fast, and it doesn’t need a thinking mode. But the downside is that it can suddenly get dumb out of nowhere.
Characters or scenes can get mixed up. Someone’s mother suddenly becomes another character’s mother, or the model skips entire scenes and just moves on based on your latest message.
It happens from time to time. Sometimes it’s surprisingly competent, but other times it’s so dumb that I just want to throw my phone.
Luckily, there’s a workaround. If it suddenly starts losing track of the scene or messing up your story, you can switch to DeepSeek Pro.

DeepSeek Pro is much better at understanding what’s happening in the scene. It doesn’t mix up your storyline as easily, follows your writing more accurately, and handles things with more depth.
The only downside is that it’s a bit more expensive than the Flash version.
Another thing I’ve noticed about the Flash version is that it tends to turn your story into a conspiracy theory sometimes.
If you’re using SillyTavern mainly for RPG-style RP though, Flash can be a pretty good choice. Just keep in mind that the conspiracy thing might depend on your presets. I’m not entirely sure, since I switch between presets a lot.
If you’re just getting started with SillyTavern RP, I’d say top up $2 and give DeepSeek a try through its official API. It’s a cheap way to experiment and see if it works for you. Have fun.
